Reportable Disease Follow Up
An important part of Ledge Light Health District's responsibility is the monitoring and control of communicable disease. Area physicians, hospitals, and laboratories are required, by state law, to report selected diseases to the local Director of Health. The Director is then required to investigate the extent of these illnesses, and apply control measures when necessary. This involves interviewing the affected persons and, in some cases, friends, family members and associates. The District maintains a database of all reportable diseases.
Ledge Light Health District works closely with Lawrence and Memorial Hospital, Backus Hospital, the VNA of Southeastern CT, and the public schools to monitor communicable disease.
The list of reportable diseases is revised annually by the State of Connecticut Department of Public Health. By monitoring these diseases, epidemiologists can identify potential outbreaks and sources of disease. This knowledge helps public health professionals implement education and prevention measures which could help contain an outbreak. This monitoring is also an important part of public health’s involvement in bio-terrorism prevention and response.
