Multi-State E. coli Outbreak

December 7, 2006

The CDC is currently investigating numerous cases in several states of E. coli 0157-H7. Although no there have been no confirmed cases in Connecticut, state and local agencies are conducting surveillance activities to identify any possible local cases.

If you believe that you are experiencing symptoms of food borne illness, please do the following:

  • Contact a physician and have a stool specimen collected as part of the visit.  Since some laboratories do not automatically test for E. coli O157, it is recommended that testing for E. coli be specifically requested by the physician.

  • Contact Ledge Light Health District to report the suspected illness.

  • Please submit any food samples to your Ledge Light Health District for possible laboratory testing pending the outcome of the stool specimen.

Please contact Steve Mansfield, Assistant Director, Environmental Health Services, if you have any questions or concerns regarding this outbreak.
