About Us
Dedicated to Public Health
The Ledge Light Health District provides professionally managed comprehensive public health services designed to improve the quality of life and health safety of our service population. The District service area consists of the Town of East Lyme, Town and City of Groton, the Town of Ledyard, the City of New London and the Town Waterford, with a service population of over 119,000.
The Director of Health of Ledge Light Health District is charged with protecting the health of the citizens we serve by enforcing the Public Health Code of the State of Connecticut. The Ledge Light Health District has a staff of friendly public health professionals dedicated to protecting the public health.
Environmental Health
Our environmental health department is staffed by 7 Sanitarians and an Environmental Technician. These professionals are charged with upholding and enforcing the Connecticut Public Health Code by conducting inspections of food service establishments, salons, lodging establishments, public pools, group homes and day cares and by reviewing and approving plans for septic systems and wells. In addition, this department fields nuisance complaints, lead investigations, mold and indoor air quality investigations, beach water and shellfish sampling, rabies investigations and all other environmental public health services.
Health Education
Our health education department is staffed by 3 Health Educators, a Project Assistant and 2 Program Coordinators. These professionals are committed to providing health education and community outreach to our entire service area, as well as serving on New London County-wide health initiatives. The staff continually seeks funding opportunities from federal, state, local and private sources in order to implement health education and promotion programs to benefit our service population.
Public Health/Emergency Preparedness
Our Public Health Preparedness Coordinator is focused on preparing for an event in our communities. With help from other staff members, she plans for the local response to a public health emergency, such as a bioterrorism attack or a pandemic flu outbreak. She works closely with first response agencies in our communities to best prepare for an event.
Finance/Administration
The Finance/Administration Department works to ensure the effective and efficient operation of the District. The 3 professionals in administration focus on operations (finance, accounting, human resources, information technology, communications, facility management), enabling the public health professionals in the other departments to focus on protecting the public health.
